Quesadillas, tacos, wraps…the meal possibilities are endless with these homemade flour tortillas!
This is a really simple recipe, making it a great one to get the kids involved…so let them get their hands dirty! I know Maddie always has a blast when the rolling pin is involved, so let them get in there and have some fun!
2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
2 1/2 tbsp vegetable shortening
2 1/2 tbsp lard
3/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup warm water
Step 1: Mix flour, shortening and lard in a bowl with your fingers until well combined.
Step 2: Dissolve the salt in the warm water and add about 2/3 of the mixture to the flour/shortening/lard bowl and mix well.
Step 3: Add the remainder of the water and mix.
Step 4: Knead on a flat surface until a medium firm consistency
Step 5: Divide into about 12 balls and place on a plate covered in saran wrap to settle for 30 minutes.
Step 6: Roll each ball out until about 7 inches in diameter, flouring as needed.
Step 7: Place each tortilla on heated griddle for about 30-45 second per side, then place in cloth napkin until all are cooked and ready to eat!
As with any tortillas they will harden and tear more easily if they are left out or dry, so it’s best to use these right away!
We use these for cheese and chicken quesadillas and they are a hit every time! The flexibility of what you can use these for is phenomenal, making it a definite go-to recipe when you’re stumped for dinner ideas!
